The Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg began construction of the race course Friday on the corner of Bay Shore Drive North East and 1st Avenue South East.
The crews put down the ceremonial first blocks of what will become an 1.8 mile 14-turn course that will run through the streets of downtown St. Pete.
The construction process will take 35 days. The crew of 250 workers will put up 20,000 feet of steel-reinforced concrete barriers and 44,000 feet of chain-link fencing, the event organizers said.
