St. Pete mayor, Rays' owner to discuss plans for new stadium

ST. PETERSBURG, FL -

Mayor Bill Foster has his long-awaited meeting today with Tampa Bay Rays principal owner Stu Sternberg to talk about the team's hopes of moving into a new stadium.

The men, who are set to meet this afternoon, have emerged as the two most visible players in the increasingly contentious Rays stadium debate. It's been about a year since the two sat down to try and resolve the logjam, Foster said.

Despite posting winning records the past few years, the Rays have drawn disappointing crowds at Tropicana Field, where the team is obligated to play through 2027. Rays executives say the outdated Trop is in the wrong location and will never draw enough fans to sustain a winning baseball team.
