Mayor Buckhorn announced Tuesday Tampa received five new solid waste vehicles that run on compressed natural gas.
"Replacing our older, diesel-powered garbage trucks with CNG trucks is good business. They will save taxpayer's money, and are environmentally-friendly and more efficient," said Mayor Bob Buckhorn. "This is just the beginning for our fleet of CNG vehicles."
The city will add five more CNG-powered trucks to the fleet by 2014, according to the city report.
These trucks have about 40% less greenhouse gas emissions and cost less to maintain. They will save about $152,000 annually, the city officials said.
