Suspected killer caught in Louisiana

Posted: Updated:
PINELLAS COUNTY, FL -

The killing spree started a month ago at the "La Quinta Inn" in East Lealman. That's when they say 25-year-old Jamaal Jenkins, a career criminal with numerous arrests and stints in prison, shot 24-year-old Destynee Burkes, execution style, in the back of the head, killing her.

About a week later, detectives say Jenkins did the same thing to Tieyannie Hollis at the Mariner's Point apartments in St. Petersburg. "What's very important for us is that this guy, this killer is off the streets. And we said that we'd get him and we did." said Pinellas County Sheriff Bob Gualtieri.

Finding Jenkins wasn't easy. After figuring out what cell phone Jenkins used, law enforcement found out who he called. "Once they got the subscriber information from those numbers that were called, is to send law enforcement personnel out to every single one of those locations and talk to people" said Sheriff Gualtieri. In what seemed like a needle in a haystack, the sheriff says they asked dozens if they'd seen anyone who looked like Jenkins.

"They eventually got a lead in Metairie Louisiana ...learned Jenkins hung out on the porch of an apartment he rented. On Friday, they arrested Jenkins without incident.

Police in St. Petersburg say Jenkins shot Burkes because she knew he'd run into her with his car.

And they say he shot Hollis for talking to cops and because Burkes was seeing Tieyannie

Jenkin's life on the run is now over. "He had said many times, numerous times, he wasn't going back to prison. He wasn't going back to jail. And he was going to take people out with him" said the Sheriff.

Jamaal Jenkins just got out of prison last November. The sheriff hopes, this time, he stays there.
