Bill that protects right to speak is expected to pass this year

TALLAHASSEE, FL -

A bill that protects citizens' right to speak at open public meetings in Florida was approved by a Senate Committee this week.

As it stands now, people are welcome to attend but not to participate in discussions. State Senator Joe Negron has been trying to change that.

"Next to your right to jury trial and your right to vote, your right to speak before people that are spending the money and are making policies," he said. "That trio of rights to me are really worth fighting for."

This is the second year in a row the bill has been presented. If it passes, there will still be exceptions to when and for how long people can speak.

The bill has not been heard by the House yet.
