Future of Florida online education is up for debate

Posted: Updated:
TALLAHASSEE, FL -

The Florida Higher Education Coordinating Council met Friday in Tallahassee to discuss the possibilities to expand online higher education.

Florida leads the nation in online learning, according to Randy Goin with the Board of Governors.

There was a plan to create a stand-alone state university for online classes, Goin said, but the Council would recommend to pick one school to be the leader in cyber-education.

"This is really an educational economics question in many ways and I think there is probably no better way to do it," Tony Bennett with the Education Commission said.

Any type of expansion would save tax dollars, he explained.

University System's Board of Governors will discuss this question next Wednesday in Gainesville.
