Quick fix for Clearwater Beach's Pier 60 begins Monday

CLEARWATER BEACH, FL -

The City of Clearwater officials announced Friday they will start construction work to repair Clearwater Beach's Pier 60 on February 11.

The city officials say there is no structural damage to the pier but it needs a few fixes.

"Several areas appear to have been hit by lightning and have pieces of concrete missing," says Gordon Wills, Operations Manager for the Marine and Aviation Department. "The wood has been rotated to extend its life, but now it's time to be replaced."

The walkways will be repaired and the wood railings will be replaced with a new composite material that is guaranteed to last for 50 years, according to the city's report. They will also build a catwalk around the baitshop.

The pier's Sunsets daily and nightly festival will still take place as Pier 60 will stay open. The city officials hope the construction will impact the residents and vendors as little as possible.

The repairs will cost about $500,000 and should take approximately six months, according to the city report. The price tag on the repairs was $2.2 million in 1994 when the pier was last rebuilt.
