St. Pete puts the brakes on additional red light cameras

Posted: Updated:
ST PETERSBURG -

Red light runners in St. Petersburg may get a break when it comes to red light cameras. Thursday, St. Pete Mayor Bill Foster said he's going to hold off on adding more cameras to St. Pete intersections.

The installation freeze comes at a time when many are questioning the effectiveness and accuracy of the cameras.  At Thursday's St. Pete city council meeting, a vocal opponent of the cameras, Matt Florell, said the city wrongly issued tickets more than 1,600 times because some yellow lights turn red too quickly. The city's traffic engineers dispute that claim.

Initially, the city administration wanted to expand the red light camera program from 22 to 31 cameras.
