PSTA sets all-time daily ridership record

PINELLAS COUNTY, FL -

Officials at the Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority are revved up after setting an all-time daily ridership record.

PSTA officials say they were pleasantly surprised to tally 50,791 boardings on Friday, February 1, marking the highest number of rides in a single day of service.

PSTA Chair and St. Petersburg City Councilman Jeff Danner said, "Our highest ridership usually comes during Spring Break. So to see this record set this early in the year is proof positive that the demand for transit in Pinellas County is skyrocketing. It also underscores the need for improved transit service in our region as demand now exceeds capacity on numerous routes."

Despite not knowing the reason for the increased ridership on that particular day, PSTA officials feel that it's a sign of an improving economy and the possible beginning of a vigorous tourist season. The PSTA also cited increasing prices at the pump as a possible cause for the ridership increase.
