Hernando warning: fake officer making traffic stops

Posted: Updated:
HERNANDO COUNTY, FL -

Hernando County Deputies say someone is driving around in a vehicle that looks a lot like an unmarked police car, and has even conducted at least one traffic stop -- but this person is not a law enforcement officer.

Investigators say the man pulled over someone Sunday night, between 9:45 and 10 p.m., in the area of Cortez Boulevard and McKethan Road. The phony officer's vehicle was a Crown Victoria, equipped with red and blue flashing lights on the dash and grill. It did not have a cage for prisoner transport.

The fake officer was dressed in black, and was wearing a gun belt, and what appeared to be a Glock handgun. He did not display a badge, and there were no law enforcement markings on his clothing. Deputies say the man was about 5' 8", 200 pounds, and 27-32 years old.

Hernando Deputies say, if you are pulled over by an unmarked vehicle and you feel uncomfortable, you should call 911 to verify that the officer or deputy is legitimate. They advise that you NOT speed up, but rather, continue at, or below, the speed limit to a well-lit, populated area.
