The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office is warning county residents about so-called gypsy scams. It's the time of year, when authorities say, con men descend on the Bay area preying on residents, especially the elderly.
Corporal Bruce Crumpler works in the Sheriff's Office economic crimes unit. "They're trying to do home improvement scams," said Crumpler. "Whether it's repairing a roof, refinishing a driveway, pest control type activity, those are things that they tend to focus on with the elderly. "
Crumpler did have some tips for folks who don't want to become victims. "If they're in your neighborhood, maybe they have a white panel van with an unknown business name on the side and they're going door to door soliciting what appears to be a too good to be true offer, that's a clue. "
He also says, always make sure your garage door is shut and your front door is locked. Another good piece of advice: never pay for home repairs with cash.
