Armed with a search warrant, Hillsborough Animal Services investigators raided a home in Plant City early Monday.
A tip told them they'd find dogs confined in poor conditions. When officials arrived, they found a dog fighting operation at 2020 Coleson Road.
Hillsborough County Animal Services confiscated 26 pit bulls ranging in age from 8 months to 3 years. "Some of them as you could see, scared, clearly injured. Swollen. Bleeding. Others had older scars indicative of dog fighting" said veteran investigator Sgt. Pam Perry.
The dogs were being kept in pens constructed of wooden pallets. Around their necks were heavy tow chains. All, according to investigators, indicative of a dog fighting operation.
The dogs are being cared for while legal paperwork is sorted out. Investigators expect to charge more than one person with a criminal offense. The dogs are also being evaluated for possible adoption, but their past lives as fighters may preclude some from becoming pets.
