MacDill makes changes with incoming air traffic

Posted: Updated:
TAMPA, FL (WFLA) -

MacDill Air Force base is making changes with incoming air traffic after a cargo plane landed at the wrong airport.

The plane was headed for the base but landed at nearby Peter O. Knight Airport in July. Onboard was Gen. James N. Mattis, commander for the U.S. Central Command in Tampa.

An investigation found that there was confusion identifying the airports in the area. MacDill routinely coordinates the local airports and the Federal Aviation Administration as part of the MidAir Collision Avoidance Program.

Base officials say an updated landing procedure was established in "an effort to mitigate airport identification issues and further increase situational awareness in the vicinity." The changes require crews to contact the base air traffic control tower when their aircraft is within five nautical miles of MacDill.
