They make a living being outrageous. Over the years Bubba "The Love Sponge" Clem has said some things that weren't very nice about a number of people.
Todd "MJ" Schnitt, has also made a very comfortable living, doing the same thing on a variety of radio programs.
But when Bubba was charged with animal cruelty in 2001 for an on-air stunt involving a hog, he went after rival Todd Schnitt in the aftermath.
Schnitt had his own trouble after an on-air stunt gone wrong. During his radio program, his staff set a van on fire trying to get big flames as they cooked a turkey. A Tampa firefighter was injured responding to a call to put the fire out.
While Bubba faced charges for his incident, Schnitt did not. Bubba claimed on the air, that Schnitt's wife Michelle used her influence in the cases. Michelle Schnitt once worked in the Hillsborough County State Attorney's office as an Assistant State Attorney.
During on-air rants, Bubba called Schnitt a liar and his wife, a whore.
Schnitt filed a civil lawsuit charging defamation of character. Jury selection began today.
Tampa attorney and legal analyst Joe Episcopo says it will be difficult to prove defamation in this case. Episcopo says, "Well first of all, this is radio parody, so how can you have defamation when radio parody is part of that."
Episcopo says the case isn't about money, it's about ego. "What MJ should have done was do some parodies on Bubba. He had a lot of material. It would have been very entertaining and maybe he wouldn't have lost his ratings," says Episcopo.
