A picture of a dog shot with an arrow on Facebook prompted social media users to help.

"You can save dogs 24/7 on Facebook," said animal advocate Heath Bodden.

A man driving by American Used Trucks on 31st S. Ave. in Tampa snapped a picture of the dog with an arrow sticking through its ribs Friday night. His ex-wife posted it to her Facebook page and soon animal lovers across the Bay area were commenting on it.

"I knew that I needed to do something," said Bodden.

Bodden drove to the address on the picture and learned concerned workers there had already reported the injured stray to authorities earlier in the week.

"That person doesn't have a heart," said American Used Trucks employee Carolina Villegas. "It's just horrible."

Dog trappers came to the business Wednesday, but were unable to catch the scared female lab mix. Bodden called 911 Friday night.

"We sent a team of officers out this morning to tranquilize the dog and bring it back to the shelter,' said Hillsborough Animal Services Director Ian Hallett.

A Hillsborough Animal Services vet performed emergency surgery to remove the arrow Saturday afternoon.

"Once we got inside, we found several vital organs injured and a lot of infection had already set in," said Hallett.

The dog had to be euthanized. Bodden says there is a way to memorialize her. Someone at the scrap yard saw his animal rescue van Saturday morning and asked him to help a homeless cat and her four kittens.

"In honor of this dog now being in heaven, we can save those cats," said Bodden.

Anyone interested in rescuing the cats can call him at (813) 495-3728.

Investigators don't have any leads on who shot the dog. They are urging anyone who knows to call Hillsborough County Animal Services at (813) 744-5660.
