Gun Control Is Front and Center as Debate Continues

Posted: Updated:
TAMPA, FL (WFLA) -

There's a lot of talk in Washington about new gun control laws. Vice-president Joe Biden is preparing to give the President a list of proposals that include a new ban on assault weapons and large capacity clips. He also wants stronger background checks on gun buyers, and closure of the so-called gun show loophole. His goal is to make things safer.

"Diminish the probability that what we've seen in these mass shootings will occur and diminish the probability that our children are at risk in their schools" said the Vice-president.

Florida Senator Marco Rubio says the focus should not be only on guns. "We do have a violence problem in the United States. There's no doubt about it. I think what we need to look at is not just guns. But all the factors behind the violence" said Senator Rubio.

The Senator said the Second Amendment must be respected if new gun control legislation is proposed. "I'm open to any regulations that will protect the constitutional right of law abiding people to possess arms and keep arms out of the hands of criminals and those that are mentally ill.  And if someone can come up with a law that does those two things, I'll be supportive of it," he said.
