One person is dead, and a Hillsborough County Sheriff's detective is being treated for non-life-threatening injuries, following a shooting Wednesday evening.
It happened just before 6 PM at the Cinnamon Cove Apartments, located on 122nd Avenue and 16th Street North.
Authorities say the injured deputy was taken to Tampa General Hospital and is expected to make a full recovery.
The Hillsborough Sheriff's Office has not released the suspect's name. Relatives at the crime scene were mourning the death of Robert Gary, 31, and told News Channel 8 he was the man shot dead.
"He loved life," said Gary's step-father Dallas Gillyard. "He loved living. He loved his family."
Hillsborough Sheriff's officials said three undercover detectives came to the complex Wednesday after neighbors complained about drug dealers selling crack cocaine. While a detective attempted to buy drugs from the suspect, authorities said he tried to rob the detective and a struggle began.
"During the confrontation, the detectives gun came loose," said Hillsborough Col. Donna Lusczynski. "The deputy and the suspect struggled over the gun at which time several shots were fired."
Sheriff's officials wouldn't say if the suspect was armed or if he fired any of the shots before he was shot dead.
"Our back up deputies moved in, saw the deputy fighting for his life, and shot and killed the suspect," said Lusczynski.
The three detectives are now on a standard administrative leave. The State Attorney's Office is investigating.
