Increasing rain, thunderstorm chances south of Tampa Bay

Updated:
Update at 4:32 p.m.: A severe thunderstorm warning is in effect for Sarasota County until 5:15 p.m.

As a front to the south lifts back north today, clouds will increase.  There will also be a 40 percent chance of scattered showers developing, especially south of Tampa Bay.

“There will be some showers around Thursday evening, but rain chances will diminish after 8 pm,” said Storm Team 8 Meteorologist Julie Phillips.

Temperatures will remain very mild overnight in the upper 60s with a mostly cloudy sky.

Do not forget the rain gear on Friday! An area of low pressure will develop in the Gulf of Mexico and move towards Florida on Friday. This will bring the Tampa Bay area a 60 percent chance of showers and storms. Heavy rain can be expected along with an isolated strong storm.

Isolated showers are possible in the morning hours, but the better rain chances move in during the afternoon. Rain may continue into the night. Highs Friday will get back into the upper 70s and low 80s.

Improving conditions are expected on Saturday as this system moves out. There is still a 20 percent chance of lingering showers though on Saturday morning.

Highs on Saturday will be in the upper 70s with a partly sunny sky.
