TAMPA, FL (WFLA) -

The Broadway hit Wicked is making its return to the stage in the Bay Area. The Straz Center in Tampa welcomes the musical for a two week run beginning January 9th.

Crews are already constructing the elaborate special effects stage that makes the show such an epic spectacle.

"It takes two and a half days to set up. It's 11 semi trucks worth of stuff," said Wicked company manager Erica Norgaard.

She says the production even trucks in its own stage. "One it's pretty, and it's painted, and it has gears in it," Norgaard explained.  "And then also it has special effects built into it, smoke and fog and lights, and then also it creates the same space for the actors," she said.

If you've never seen the show Wicked is not The Wizard of Oz, but production manager David O'Brien says the show does give several nods to that original story.

"It's the story of Glenda and Elphaba. Glenda who you know is the Good Witch and Elphaba who became what is known as the Wicked Witch of the West," O'Briend said.

Wicked also relies on lots of local talent to make each stage performance possible.

"We travel about 20 of our crew that are working today and hire about 80 locally that work on their teams and set up things," Norgaard said.

The production also has six traveling orchestra members. "We pick the rest up locally, so they'll be rehearsing this afternoon and this evening," O'Brien said.

Wicked opens January 9th and runs through the 27th at the Straz Center.
