A Port Richey teenager found his mother murdered in their home on Wolcott Lane. Steven Clairmont, 40, confessed to killing her, authorities said Saturday.
At 12:30 am Saturday, Michelle Deltufo heard her 17-year-old neighbor screaming for help.
"It was horrible, especially seeing him with the blood on his hands," said Deltufo. "He said he was trying to help her and save her."
Pasco Sheriff's officials said, sadly, there was no saving his mother, Kelly Bennett, 35. She was already dead in the living room of their home.
"It was a very horrific scene inside that home and I can only imagine how horrific it must have been for her son," said Pasco Sheriff's spokesperson Melanie Snow.
Snow said a half hour before Bennett's son called 911, another emergency call came in from a woman nearly one-mile away. The caller said she was driving home from work when a man at the intersection of Galen Wilson Boulevard and Bahama Avenue startled her so much that she stopped her car.
"He was covered head to toe in blood," explained Snow.
The man was later identified as Clairmont. Snow said he confessed to killing Bennett when he was arrested. Clairmont had just moved into Bennett's home three weeks ago and was working for her as a handyman.
"He's done some work around the property," said Snow.
Bennett sent her son a text message at 11:22 PM Friday, according to the arrest report. She asked him when he was coming home because "she was having words with Steve and was not happy".
"I feel so bad for her son," said neighbor Gayle Schmatz. "That poor kid. He's only 17 years-old."
Clairmont has been arrested before several times in Pasco County, including on a charge of burglary involving an assault. He's now charged with first degree murder.
