Pinellas teacher admits to downloading child pornography

Posted: Updated:
PINELLAS COUNTY, FL -

A teacher at Cross Bayou Elementary in Pinellas Park was arrested Friday for possession of child pornography. Investigators are also looking into allegations that John Kaneski, 42, sexually abused a young girl.

Pinellas County Sheriff's detectives were using software to try to track people downloading child pornography in November when they came across Kaneski's online accounts. They served a search warrant Friday at Kaneski's Dunedin home and said they found enough evidence on his computer to arrest him, including graphic videos and hundreds of explicit images of young girls in sexual acts.

"He wasn't just downloading it and viewing it himself," said Sheriff Bob Gualtieri. "He had his own library and he was also distributing it out to others and sharing it."

The married father of two is now charged with ten felony counts of possessing child pornography. This isn't the first time allegations have been made against Kaneski. An 8-year-old girl accused the teacher of sexually battering her in 2005 at Curlew Creek Elementary, where Kaneski worked at the time.

"That investigation was closed in 2005 because the girl recanted her statement after having made the allegation," said Gualtieri.

Investigators are now looking into another allegation from another young girl that surfaced after Kaneski's Friday arrest.

Kaneski teaches English as a second language at Cross Bayou Elementary. Sheriff Gualtieri urged his students' parents to talk to their kids and to call investigators if they say something isn't right.

Sheriff Gualtieri calls the allegations against Kaneski "concerning". He said, unfortunately, there are many other people downloading child pornography in Pinellas County everyday and his agency is putting more of an emphasis on tracking them down in 2013.

"This is absolutely atrocious. This is a great threat to public safety. It's a great threat to our kids. It's a great threat to our society."
