Returns appear to be the source of a problem in which customers bought iPads but ended up with boxes of notebook paper, a Walmart spokeswoman said.
At least two customers in Tampa Bay – one in St. Petersburg and one in Winter Haven – reported buying iPads at Walmart before Christmas and finding yellow notebook pads in the box instead of an iPad.
Robert Koeneke said he bought the iPad as a Christmas gift for his wife, who opened it while he was sleeping and ran in to tell him what she found.
"I was a little upset because I thought at first she was pulling a joke on me," Koeneke said. "Then I realized she was serious."
Contacted by News Channel 8 about the issue last week, a Walmart spokeswoman said the issue was "happening all over" and also happening to other retailers. At the time, she said they were looking at surveillance video in stores and also at the return process.
On Wednesday, Walmart spokeswoman Sarah Spencer said Walmart had narrowed the issue down to the return process, believing that someone is buying the iPads, taking them out of the box and then resealing them.
"We're working with our stores to put together a better process for these returns when they come in," Spencer said.
