Tampa's water department is looking for some water-guzzling volunteers, who want to cut their consumption, and earn a big rebate.
It's calling it the "build your own rebate" program. Homeowners who use more than 15,000 gallons a month can apply. The average single-family home uses less than 6,000 gallons a month. Only about 10% of customers use 15,000 gallons or more per month.
Customers who sign up for the rebate program can choose any method they wish to cut their consumption. Water officials recommend fixing leaks, modifying irrigation schedules, installing water-saving fixtures and appliances, and taking shorter showers.
Participants can choose their goal, anywhere from a 5% to 20% reduction in consumption. A 5% reduction is worth a $50 credit, while a 20% reduction is worth $500.
You can sign up for the program by visiting the City of Tampa Water Department online or by calling a Water Efficiency and Conservation Coordinator at (813) 274-8121.
