A Spring Hill woman is charged with child abuse after two kids in her care ate crack cocaine. Investigators believe the 9 and 11-year-olds ingested the drugs on Christmas Day at a home Riddle Drive. Hernando County Sheriff Al Nienhuis said a crack pipe was found in the home.
Kimberly Losurdo was arrested Thursday after the 9-year-old was rushed to the hospital. Investigators said the child's blood tested positive for crack cocaine.
"What the children were saying was the suspect was often seen smoking something that wasn't a cigarette and also snorting what was believed to be cocaine," said Nienhuis.
Investigators said the child believed the crack cocaine was candy.. Losurdo told investigators the child was vomiting and she thought was suffering from the flu. When the 9-year-old started having seizures Thursday, Losurdo called 911.
After the 9-year-old was hospitalized, the Department of Children and Families took custody of two other children in the house, ages 11 and 16. They were also tested for drugs as a precaution. The 11 year-old tested positive for crack cocaine.
"It's very disturbing and very disappointing," said the Sheriff.
Sheriff Nienhuis said the 11-year-old did not show any symptoms of being sick. Both children are expected to be fine.
A neighbor told News Channel 8 she called the Department of Children and Families this fall because she was worried about the children.
"Everyone on the street has said, there's something wrong in that house," said the neighbor who didn't want to be identified.
Losurdo is now charged with two counts of child abuse and is being held in Hernando County on a $10,000 bond. The three children who were in Losurdo's care are now in DCF custody.
