If you're thinking about taking a dip in the waters along the Courtney Campbell Causeway, you might want to choose a different beach.
Pinellas County health officials have issued an advisory for the water at the City of Clearwater's beach along the Causeway. Testing has revealed high levels of enteric bacteria (Enterococci). The bacteria normally resides in the intestinal tracts of humans and animals. It can cause disease, infections, or rashes in humans.
The testing was conducted on December 26. Another sample will be analyzed on January 7. Until then, health officials advise people and their pets to avoid contact with the water.
Enteric bacteria indicates fecal pollution. It could come from a variety of sources, including storm water run-off, animals, and sewage.
