Winter Haven Police say they finally have the gunman locked up who killed a Polk County teenager. Alicia Barnett, 18, was murdered November 12th on the Chain of Lakes Trail in Winter Haven. Antonio Donte Callaway, 19, was arrested for his role in the killing two weeks ago. His friend, Ethan Lucas, 20, joined him at the Polk County jail Thursday night.
Winter Haven Police Chief Gary Hester said new physical evidence proves Lucas pulled the trigger.
"What's really disturbing is Ethan Lucas has been involved in the criminal justice system since he was 12 years of age," said Hester.
Lucas has been charged with 18 crimes in the last eight years, according to Hester. He's currently on supervised probation through the Department of Juvenile Justice for a 2009 charge of attempted murder.
"If he was in prison or jail where he should have been, Miss Barnett would still be alive today," said Hester.
As officers loaded Lucas into a police cruiser Thursday night, he told News Channel 8 he's "not guilty".
A Polk County grand jury indicted him Thursday for first degree murder. Police believe Lucas and Callaway told Barnett they wanted to buy marijuana from her, but really planned to rob her of the drugs. Investigators said the robbery somehow got botched and that's when Barnett was killed.
Barnett and Callaway both attended New Beginnings High School in Winter Haven. Months before Barnett was killed, her older sister was murdered in an unrelated shooting in South Florida.
