With only a week left until Christmas, shoppers are busy trying to finish their gift lists. Distracted shoppers can be easy targets for someone who is looking to be a grinch. To help keep consumers safe, the Sheriff's Office mounted patrol is on duty and keeping an eye out for trouble.
Cathy Ulm is a volunteer with the Sheriff's Office mounted patrol. She says they look for potential problems. "From up here we can see all the way across the parking lot so if somebody is going from car to car and looking for packages and unlocked doors we can see it and call it in."
The sheriff's office says criminals look for easy victims and just a little distraction is all they need to get what they want. Colonel Mike Maurer with the Hernando County Sheriff's Office says a recent case shows how easy it is to become a victim. "A lady had just done a significant amount of shopping was loading up all of here stuff put her purse in the car and as she went to go return the cart back to the cart return area somebody ran out from some cars and stole her purse."
