Bay area schools add extra security

Posted: Updated:

Several school districts took extra precautions today in light of the events in Connecticut last Friday.

School districts all over the bay area reached out to parents to let them know their children would be safe in school and added the extra police presence to calm their fears.

Hillsborough county school officials had to go on immediate rumor control, after someone found a bullet on a school bus. The bus serves Turner elementary, Liberty middle school and Wharton high school. Those three schools were placed on an immediate modified lock down.. and school security officers went to each school.

Late in the afternoon, school officials reported that an 18 year old student told them he found the bullet at his apartment complex and that placed it in his pocket. He told them it must have fallen out of the pocket.

One parent contacted News Channel Eight.. after her daughter texted her from Wharton saying a gun had been found on a bus. School officials were quick to say that rumor was not true.  School spokesman Stephen Hegarty says, " That's why we need to be quick to communicate because the rumors are usually a lot worse than reality."
