In a move that had been anticipated by political insiders, former Florida governor Charlie Crist made it official today.
He left the Republican Party behind for the Democrats.
The former Florida governor strolled into the Pinellas County supervisor of elections office, prepared to do what many had suspected -- switch parties.
"I brought my form with me and make sure I did that right...if you don't mind," said Crist.
Within a matter of minutes, Crist went from being an independent to a democrat, after serving for years as Florida's governor and attorney general as a republican.
Outside the office, Crist told reporters, he's happy he made the switch.
"I think it is very important that is in a public policy position... serves with a servants heart.... and is compassionate and caring....and that is a big reason I am a democrat now."
But could this move be setting the foundation for another run as Governor, this time as a Democrat?
"I really haven't made any decision about that at this time, and I just want to listen. This is a process that is very important and I don't take it lightly."
