At least two gunmen shot and killed a senior citizen at his home in Lakeland Tuesday. Deputies say the 66 year-old man died in his front yard.
"Why would somebody want to kill a senior citizen," said Polk Co. Sheriff Grady Judd. "We have no idea...absolutely no idea."
Deputies received the call around 3:00 about the shooting at 1044 Captiva Point in Lakeland where Horace Scott lived. Investigators say Scott was dead near the front door of his home.
"It's very important to us that we catch these murderers earlier rather than later," Judd said as deputies and K9 officers canvassed the area in an attempt to find the suspects.
Witnesses said two or three men opened fire on Scott's home then ran away. Deputies had no suspects by nightfall.
"We will be out here all night long, talking to witnesses, and scouring the area for these suspects," Judd said. "The Scott family needs justice for this senseless crime. Please, please call us if you know anything about this homicide, or to remain anonymous call Heartland Crime Stoppers at 1-800-226-TIPS (8477)."
The victim, Horace Scott, had an arrest record himself which included possession of Cocaine within 1000 Feet of Day Care in 2006.
"I can tell you this," Judd said. "Horace Scott should not have died and the people responsible must be brought to justice."
