Man robs Winter Haven Papa John's at gunpoint, police say

WFLA web staff - WINTER HAVEN, FL (WFLA) - A suspect threatened a pizza delivery driver, barged into the Papa John's and stole money from the cash register threatening the clerk with a gun Friday night, according to Winter Haven Police. Police are working to locate the suspect.

The robbery happened at the Papa John's Pizza located at 170 Southeast Plaza. At about 11 p.m., the driver was getting out of his car after making a delivery. According to WHPD, a heavy-set black man approached him and demanded money threatening the driver with a gun. When the driver told the attacker he had no cash, the suspect pointed at the door of the pizza shop.

The door was locked and everybody needed to be buzzed in from the inside. The clerk inside was on the phone taking a pizza order. She didn't see the suspect so when she buzzed the driver in, the man got inside as well.

The cashier put down the phone but didn't hang up. When the suspect started yelling at her demanding money she cried and the caller immediately hung up and called 911. The clerk gave the suspect the money from the cash register and the man fled.

Winter Haven PD K9 tracked him all the way to the Publix across the street but lost track there. Detectives believe he got in a car there and left the area.

They do not have the description of the vehicle but have the description of the suspect. He is described as a 20-25-year-old heavy-set dark-skinned black male, approximately 5 feet 8 inches with collar-length dreads. He was wearing a white t-shirt, long black shorts with plaid boxers showing above the pants waist and possibly dark sneakers with white soles and white laces.

If you can identify him, please call Heartland Crime Stoppers at 1-800-226-TIPS (8477). Callers can remain anonymous and could be eligible for a cash reward of up to $3000.
