ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (WFLA) -- St. Petersburg police officials tell News Channel 8 a woman who was found critically injured in a park last week has died.
Christie New passed away Wednesday morning.
Police are trying to figure out what happened to the 43-year-old.
A police spokeswoman says homicide detectives are on the case and evidence shows New "didn't do this to herself."
Police say a city park worker found her in Lake Maggiore Park just after 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, March 1. Authorities say New was suffering from life-threatening trauma when she was found and was taken to the hospital.
News Channel 8's Amanda Ciavarri spoke with the park employee who found New. He says that around 7 a.m. on March 1st he was working in the park and saw nothing. Then around 11:30 a.m. the same day he heard a woman moan and saw New at the base of some trees. When he saw that she had blood on her, he immediately called 911.
The park employee says he thinks New was beaten elsewhere and dumped in the park, because the area where she was found is to the street.
New is from South Florida, likely the Florida Keys, officials say.
