Suspect dies, mystery of missing Clearwater woman unsolved

WFLA Web Staff - CLEARWATER, Fla. (WFLA) - The mystery surrounding the disappearance of a Clearwater woman has taken a dramatic turn, a suspect in the case is dead.

The case is something that you might see in a Hollywood movie. A woman vanished and the man she was staying with is suspected in her death. Detectives have dug up a yard and traveled to another county, searching for clues in the case.

Now, the death of the suspect has the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office once again asking people to come forward with information.

Roberta Rene Cable, age 43, vanished on Dec. 14, 2013 after leaving her home located at 1700 Owen Drive in Clearwater.

Detectives say Cable shared the residence with Jerry Gaston, age 64. The two were roommates at the Owen Drive address at the time of her disappearance.

Back in July, Pinellas County Sheriff Bob Gualtieri asked for the public's help solving the case. "The Pinellas County Sheriff's office suspects that Jerry Gaston killed Roberta Cable and disposed of her body," said Gualtieri last July.

The investigation has spanned two counties. Sheriff's office detectives previously dug on Gaston's property and used ground penetrating radar to search for clues.

In addition to searching the Clearwater home, detectives also combed a home in Inverness that was owned by Gaston, but the search didn't find anything.

Now, some six months later, the main suspect is dead. Investigator say Gaston died Wednesday, Jan. 20 from health related issues at Bay Pines VA Hospital.

Detectives say that over the course of the investigation into Cable's disappearance, Gaston made several inconsistent statements and eventually refused to talk to investigators. He was ultimately named a suspect in the case.

On July 28, 2015 detectives executed a search warrant at Gaston's residence, where they recovered evidence related to the case.

At that time, investigators said they believed Gaston may have driven his white Ford F150 truck to an undisclosed off-road location between the dates of Dec. 14 and Dec. 15, 2013. Detectives the vehicle is connected to Cable's disappearance.

To this day Cable's whereabouts remain unknown. Detectives continue to investigate her disappearance.
