Clearwater PD officer fired for using excessive force on teen

CLEARWATER, Fla. (WFLA) -- A Clearwater Police Department officer was fired for using excessive force on a teenage boy.

Michael Leonardo, who had been with the police department for four years, was fired because of an incident that happened on April 2.

Leonardo had responded to a disturbance at a youth hall in Clearwater and took a 13 year-old boy into custody.

He handcuffed the teen and the teen tried to pull away from him.

Leonardo pushed the boy to the ground.

During the takedown, the boy's teeth were chipped, his nose was broken and he suffered abrasions.

Clearwater Police Chief Daniel Slaughter said Leonardo was fired after a review found he was too violent and used excessive force.
