News Channel 8 recognized by AP for breaking news coverage of emergency landing

News Channel 8 was recognized by the Associated Press for our coverage of an emergency landing in Sarasota.

In April 2017, Eagle 8 photographer Paul Lamison captured the moment a small plane, missing a wheel, made a dramatic landing at Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport.

The two-engine aircraft had spent an hour circling above the Gulf and burning fuel, then made the emergency landing around 6 p.m.

Sparks flew as the plane skid off the runway and into the grass, then three men and one woman exited the plane safely—our cameras caught it all.

When awards for the Florida Associated Press Broadcasters contest were announced Saturday, News Channel 8 won first place for "Breaking News Large Market" for our coverage of the incident.

“We’re not always lucky enough to get the moment of a breaking news story while it’s happening, but this was it,” the judges said.

We will have a complete list of winners online once it is available.
