Bradenton police solve mystery of gun fired in hospital parking lot

WFLA Web Staff - BRADENTON, Fla. (WFLA) -- A gunshot fired in the parking lot of Manatee General Hospital on Wednesday morning prompted a short lockdown at the hospital.

Police initially said that a gold SUV pulled into the parking lot and a man got out with a gun, fired a gunshot into the air and then left the scene.

The hospital was put on lockdown, then the lockdown was lifted.

Police say there were no injuries, no victims, no evidence, and there was no damage. They started looking for the suspect, who was reported to be seen in a gold SUV.

Police later discovered that an 18-year-old was with his father and they had spotted a gun in the 200 block of Manatee Ave East, which is south of the hospital.

A police department spokesperson said that the gun was in a storm drain. The father told his son to pick up the gun and it went off towards the ground.

They left the scene starting to head home with the gun, and saw a Bradenton Police officer and flagged him down. The father and son told the officer what happened and turned over the gun.

Police say, at this point they don't think there was any criminal intent.

Bradenton Police Department officers will run the gun, to see if it was involved in any other recent crimes.

Manatee Memorial Hospital is located at 206 2nd St. E. in Bradenton
