Jogger wearing headphones, hit, killed by Amtrak train in Frostproof

Polk County Sheriff's Office homicide detectives are conducting a death investigation after a pedestrian was struck by an Amtrak passenger train.

On Monday, March 30, the Amtrak 98 Silver Meteor train from Miami to New York, made its last stop in Sebring and was heading to its next stop in Winter Haven just after 12 p.m.

The train was traveling in the Big Sun Ray area of  Frostproof just under the U.S. 27 overpass (nearest cross street: Charles Street) when the engineer saw an adult male, 26-year-old Edwardo Salazar of Frostproof, who appeared to be jogging alongside the tracks on the outer wood cross beams. The engineer blew the train horn several times, to no avail. The jogger continued on as if not hearing the approaching train. The train made every effort to alert the man and stop, but struck the man, and he died at the scene, according to a preliminary investigation.

The victim is an adult male. Detectives are in the process of positively identifying him.

It appears he was wearing headphones.

No foul play is suspected. As of 3 p.m., the train was still stopped on the tracks, and had passengers on it.

The investigation is ongoing.
