Vinik joins Clinton Initiative to focus on health in Channelside development

WFLA Web Staff - TAMPA, FL (WFLA) -- On Tuesday Tampa Bay Lightning owner Jeff Vinik helped make a major announcement about the future of the Channelside area. Vinik shared the stage in New York with former President Bill Clinton and Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn.

Clinton announced his Global initiative will partner with Vinik and others to create a wellness district in Tampa. The $20 million project will "create a road map for how cities worldwide can be designed and developed to support public health," the parties involved said in a press release. That means you'll see more green space, walk-ability and access to healthy foods.

"All buildings within the Tampa city district will pursue WELL Certification, including new buildings such as a 400-500 room hotel, a 650,000 square foot signature office tower, the University of South Florida Morsani College of Medicine and Heart Institute, and approximately 200,000 square feet of retail, restaurant and entertainment space," the statement reads.
