Santa's Bike Shop: Volunteers assemble 800 bikes for underprivileged kids

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) -- The Amalie Arena was transformed into Santa's bike shop on Sunday, as hundreds of volunteers turned out to assemble more than 800 bikes for underprivileged kids in the Tampa Bay area.

The non-profit organization onbikes put on the event leading up to the annual Winter Wonder Ride event next weekend. Their goal, just to put a smile on children's faces this holiday season.

"A lot of these kids have been displaced from their homes whether it's drugs, violence or abuse, whatever it may be. A lot of them are in foster care. A lot of them have no idea what a normal childhood is so if we can do anything for them to establish that," said Julius Tobin, executive director of onbikes.

The bikes will be delivered all throughout this month to Tampa Bay area families, through Eckerd community alternatives, Metropolitan Ministries and the Tampa Police Department.

The Winter Wonder Ride community bike ride and fundraiser is being held December 10th in Curtis Hixon Park. Learn more about the event and sign up for the ride here.
