Final Komen Tampa Bay 3-Day begins Friday

Posted: Updated:

A parade of pink will take over Pinellas County for the last time this weekend. The final Susan G. Komen Tampa Bay 3-Day starts Friday morning in Clearwater and ends Sunday in St. Petersburg.

Breast cancer survivor Kim Crist, of Crystal Beach, has taken the local 60-mile journey for the last seven years with her team, the C-Side Sisters.

"When you see the names of so many people and you hear the stories and you think, oh wow! Do I have it in me to do it another year," Christ explained. "Then you're there and you're doing it, and you're like, I can't stop because the more people you talk to the more lives it seems to touch."

Crist said her team has raised more than $350,000 since they participating in Tampa Bay's 3-Day through their annual golf tournament, trade show, and garage sales.

They don't plan to stop their fight against breast cancer, even though the event won't return to Pinellas County next year.

"I think people are generous at heart. I think there's a lot of people out there, people who believe in what we do, like we do," Crist said. "We want the money to go where it needs to go to research and to helping local women."

The team has re-branded itself as the Traveling C-Side Sisters. They plan to walk in at least one 3-Day event next year in another city.

The Susan G. Komen 3-Day has raised more than $750 million since it began in 2005. Participation and funding has declined in recent years. The organization has walks planned in 14 cities in 2014, down from seven 3-Days this year.

If you'd like to support the 850 walkers in Tampa Bay this weekend, cheering sections will be set up at the following locations:
