TAMPA (WFLA) - Thousands came out, with boxes in tow, to the 8 On Your Side Shred-A-Thon Saturday.
The event was at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa. People started lining up early in the morning, hours before the event opened.
“I’ve been here since 6 a.m.,” said Kathleen Marser. Others were in line at 5:30 a.m. Not one person was turned away.
Approximately 65,000 pounds of paper were collected and went into huge shredding machines. Nearly 30,000 lbs of electronics were brought to the event.
This year was the first year the 8 On Your Side Shred-A-Thon also collected electronics to be destroyed, which ended up being a big hit - a number of people brought in their printers, cell phones, desktop computers and laptops.
AAA, a proud sponsor, was on site letting people know about credit monitoring programs as well.
“We are really just trying to help people protect their identity. AAA members might not realize this, but they do get 'Protect My ID' and that is a free service offered to AAA members,” said AAA Spokesman Mark Jenkins.
